Last Tuesday night I was awakened in the middle of the night by Emma.
Waking me up in the middle of the night is not a very easy task, unless it involves vomit. Because as soon as I hear the vomit cries (I don't know about anyone else, but I can totally hear in my kids' crying if they are feeling sick to their stomachs), I am wide awake and shooting across the house to get to them. But otherwise, I can sleep through fire alarms and doorbells and alarm clocks.
So back to last Tuesday night. Emma came in and was talking away, but I was just so tired. There was no crying involved and I felt her all over and didn't feel any wetness (phew, no pee in her bed) and I asked if she was feeling sick and she said "no," so I just sort of mumbled and nodded and told her to go back to bed.
And she left the room.
So on Wednesday morning, I got up early and went out to the living room to turn up the heat.
And I stepped on something strange. A pile of hair. A blond curl, to be exact.
Then I looked around me and realized that there were small blond curls spread across the floor.
And there was Emma, sleeping peacefully on the couch with my kitchen scissors laying on the pillow next to her.
Turns out, she woke up in the night with a big clump of sticky tack attached to her hair. That's why she came into me - to ask me if I could help her get it out.
And you know how that went...I just sort of mumbled and nodded and agreed...and apparently she asked was asking me if she could just cut it out of her hair herself. AND I AGREED!
So she went out into the living room and began hacking at her hair with my kitchen scissors.
Hence the blond curls all over the floor.
And ironically, the big glob of sticky tack was still stuck in her hair...
So I cut it out and had her help me clean up her hair. Then we talked about why it's not good for kids to cut their own hair ("But mamma, you told me I could..." Sigh...) and also how it's probably not best to ask mamma serious things in the middle of the night.
Thankfully Emma's curly hair is very forgiving and you can't really see where she cut because it just curls up like a ringlet and looks pretty. (On any other kind of hair, it would look ridiculous. She cut a big chunk out of the side of her head.)
And that is the story of how I woke up and found blond hair all over the living room floor.

P.S. Emma and I are flying south today for the weekend. (Ha, that almost sounds like we're birds!) A low-cost airline began flying between our island's airport and Bergen a couple of months ago, and during their first week they had some really cheap introductory prices. We jumped on it and booked a weekend stay with my sister-in-law and her family. So we are looking forward to a fun weekend with them!
